CITE Visions Card Deck Instructions

Already played the game?

Why did I get a deck of cards in the mail from CITE?

We’re asking you to play a game with them to help you clarify and nuance your answer to the question “Why Computing Integrated Teacher Education?” to expose you to potential purposes for CITE that you may not have thought about before, and to help you narrow down what’s most important to you

A photograph of a couple of the CITE Visions deck of cards including one that states "computational thinking and digital literacies will be key no matter what career teachers' future students end up in". There is a copy of the book Technology's child in the background of the image.

Right now, the game is just a prototype. We are open to your feedback and hope that you not only play the game using our procedure (or algorithm), but tinker with the rules and reflect on that tinkering – that’s where the richest learning will happen.

Directions for playing the game

Goal: Identify your top 5 purposes for CITE in your work and context.

Set up:

  • Step 1: Pick up the cards and give them a little skim. Notice each one begins with “We should integrate computing and digital literacies into teacher education because…” and provides some rationale.
  • Step 2: Draw 5 cards at random, read them. This is your hand.

On each turn:

  • Draw a new card from the deck.
  • Look at the six cards you have in your hand now and select one to discard.
    • Keep cards which have rationale that feel directly relevant to your work
  • You can discard a card in one of two places
    • A plain old “discard” pile
    • An “overflow” pile which contains values that resonate with you, and seem important, but might not be relevant to your work.

The game ends when you run out of cards in the main deck.

Rules

  • You cannot have more than five cards in your hand at the end of the game
  • Your “overflow” pile should also contain only five cards at the end of the game.
  • Rules are meant to be broken – don’t forget to tinker! For example, if you find rationale you’re not sure about, maybe you invent a third pile.

We included a few blank cards you can fill out if you don’t see your values reflected.

When you’re done with this game, please do the following:

  1. All faculty: Fill out this form to share your top 5 values with the CITE team. We will be reporting back patterns and trends during our synchronous session in June.
  2. New (2023) faculty: Go to Module 1, find the link to your College’s discussion post, and comment with your reflections in response to the prompts there.
